At the beginning of the 20th century, the Riksgränsen community was decimated by the overwhelming levels of snow. In those days, everyday life was simply impossible when multiple meters of snow were constantly in the way, they lacked adequate tools to deal with the enormous snowfall. Today, this ample precipitation is instead our hallmark and attracts skiers from all over the world. On a good day, there is no ski resort in Sweden that can match skiing in Riksgränsen. Much of the well renowned skiing here features our incredible off-piste terrain, but this is far from everything which is worthwhile. There are plenty of gentle slopes winding through nature that our perfect for all levels of skiers. Alongside established trails within the resort, there are countless easily accessible off-piste runs that create an environment of simply fun skiing. At the same time, there are many challenges for the more advanced skier, such as “Uffe’s wall”, “Rimfors” and of course Nordalsfjäll where the championship (NM) in extreme skiing is held in May every year.

SWEDEN’S BEST BACKCOUNTRY AREA 2023
In the area around Björkliden and Riksgränsen, according to Freeride’s readers’ poll in 2023, you’ll find Sweden’s best backcountry area. Here you’ll discover classics like Vassitjåkka and Låktatjåkka. If you’re new to backcountry skiing, you can always join a guided tour with our skilled guides who will help you get started. You can also choose to hire a private guide.
Here’s what Freeride had to say about the first place in 2023:
“For the fifth year in a row, the Riksgränsen-Björkliden-Abisko area clinches the top spot in the poll for Sweden’s best backcountry area. Anyone who has ever visited the area knows why – endless days and midnight sun combined with vast areas and untouched nature. We congratulate this fantastic area, once again securing a relatively dominant victory in this year’s poll.”

STATUS UPDATE FOR WINTER 2024
We have worked on maintenance and repairs for all 11 lifts in Riksgränsen and Björkliden. Our old workhorses have been significantly upgraded with new technology to enhance efficiency and reliability in our ski systems.
Riksgränsen
- The angle lift has received a new drive system, increasing accessibility, reliability, and flexibility in operation. The most noticeable differences are the capacity in number of passengers per hour and the speed.
Björkliden
- The Rakkas lift has also been upgraded with a new drive system, enhancing accessibility, reliability, and flexibility in the lift. The most significant difference here is a considerably “smoother” start and stop. A new snow groomer (Pisten Billy 600) compliant with EU environmental requirements Stage V for emission control.
Låktatjåkko
- A new catski/snowcat replacing our old workhorse, which unfortunately retired last winter.
