Winter and early spring in Riksgränsen.

Winter and late winter

Riksgränsen in winter and early spring isn’t your average destination. It’s raw, wild, beautiful, and utterly addictive

There is a place on Earth where winter is not an end, but the beginning of something much greater. As darkness slowly gives way to the returning light, Riksgränsen transforms into a mecca for freedom seekers, bon vivants, and adventurers. From the crisp, aurora-filled silence of winter to the colorful, sun-warmed festival of early spring—this is the place where you live intensely, breathe deeply, and feel completely alive. Here, you’ll create memories that will warm you long after the snow has melted.

Nature's Spectacle: From Polar Night to Eternal Light

Winter in Riksgränsen begins in a mysterious, blue light. The polar night bathes the mountain peaks in shades of purple and gold, while the magical northern lights dance across the night sky like green veils. Nature feels dormant, but beneath the thick blanket of snow, life goes on.

In the stark wilderness, animals adapt to the season. The ptarmigan, dressed in its pure white winter plumage, camouflages perfectly against the drifts and can be heard cackling on the fell. The wolverine and the reindeer move across the vast expanses, leaving graphic tracks in the untouched powder snow, and during early spring, you can see the first migratory birds returning, drawn by the intense light.

When the early spring – the mountain world's fifth season – makes its entrance in March and April, the landscape explodes in light. The sun bakes against the snow-covered mountain slopes, the snow crystals glitter like diamonds, and suddenly you can be sitting in a snowdrift in just a t-shirt and feel how the sun actually warms you.

Activities that etch themselves into memory

Riksgränsen has been named Sweden’s best backcountry skiing area for the seventh year in a row. There’s nothing quite like earning your own turns after working up a sweat, breathing harder, and finally experiencing the total sense of freedom that comes with a pristine run in fresh powder.

In winter, Lake Vassijaure also becomes a highway for snowmobiles. Around Riksgränsen, there are countless snowmobile trails to explore that take you deep into the wilderness, where no roads reach. Racing across frozen lakes with the dramatic border mountains as a backdrop is a pure dopamine rush.

For those seeking deep, Arctic tranquility, you can try ice fishing on frozen mountain lakes. Venturing out onto the thick ice of a hidden mountain lake, drilling a hole, and settling down on a soft reindeer hide with your gaze fixed on the fishing rod tip is an extraordinary experience. When the Arctic char bites, the silence is broken by an intense moment of excitement, but until then, it's just you, the thermos of coffee, the sun, and the vast mountain landscape.
