Summer in Riksgränsen – Where the Day Is Endless

Summer and Midnight Sun

Summer in Riksgränsen is short, but the concentrated vitality is immense. The endless light keeps nature active around the clock, creating a sense of energy and total freedom that is hard to find anywhere else in the world.

The Midnight Sun Phenomenon is a natural phenomenon that defies our senses. Between late May and mid-July, Riksgränsen is in a position where the sun never sets below the horizon. This is due to the Earth’s axial tilt of 23.5 degrees during the summer, when the Northern Hemisphere ”tilts” toward the sun so much that not even the Earth’s own curvature can cast a shadow over us at night.

Instead of going down, the sun slowly dips towards the north, touches the mountain peaks, and then begins to rise again. This creates a ”golden hour” that lasts for several hours. The light becomes soft, warm, and amber-colored, lending a magical depth to the landscape and making Vassitjåkka look as if it were plucked from a fairy tale. It's a time when you can start a hike at eleven in the evening and reach your destination in full daylight – a sense of freedom that is hard to describe before you've experienced it.

The time when the whole place breathes and the sun is always awake

Once the last skiers of the winter season have packed up in mid-June, a dramatic transformation takes place in Riksgränsen. What was just a white winter landscape is transformed in just a few weeks into a colorful, vibrant, and intense high-alpine oasis. Thanks to the midnight sun, the unique bedrock, and the dramatic geography, the short northern Swedish summer offers nature experiences unlike anything else in Sweden.

In June, summer and winter truly meet. You can hike on green mountain heaths while the mighty glaciers and snowfields remain on the peaks as white points of contrast. It's an awe-inspiring feeling!

Summer Weather – From Snow Showers to T-shirt Weather Under the Midnight Sun

The weather in Riksgränsen during the summer is known for being changeable, dynamic, and full of contrasts. Since the Atlantic Ocean and the Norwegian fjords are just a stone’s throw away, the maritime oceanic climate and the alpine mountain climate meet right across the border.

From the end of May to the middle of July, the sun never sets. This provides constant daylight, allowing you to hike, bike, or fish in the middle of the night under a warm, golden glow. A summer day can offer temperatures over 20°C and calm T-shirt weather, but the mountain plateau is unreliable. Rapid weather changes can bring in clouds from the sea, and it's not uncommon to experience fresh winds and temperatures dropping to 5–10°C. Layered clothing is key up here.
