About us and our history.
The problem that became a world magnet
I Riksgränsen we can boast Sweden's oldest ski school, but it was actually thanks to the construction of the Iron Ore Railway that Riksgränsen got a permanent population from the very beginning.
The railway began to be used for transporting iron ore from the mines in Malmfälten as early as November 1902, but the grand opening didn't take place until July 1903. This was because the then-current union king Oscar II didn't want to travel in the darkness and cold, preferring a visit during the midnight sun! For a long time, the railway was the only way to travel up to Riksgränsen. The E10 highway wasn't completed until 1982.
In the 1910s, snow conditions were so severe that Riksgränsen was depopulated and its 500 residents moved.
Friluftsfrämjandet, then known as Skidfrämjandet, opened its tourist station Lapplandia in 1928, establishing Riksgränsen as Sweden's northernmost ski resort.
Sweden's oldest ski school was started in 1934 by slalom pioneers Olle Rimfors and Sigge Bergman, who had been to the Alps and learned ”modern” downhill skiing at ski legend Hannes Schneider's ski school in St. Anton am Arlberg.
In 1950, Olle Rimfors became sports director at Riksgränsen, a position he held for 16 years. Under sports director Rimfors” leadership, many legendary Swedish ski instructors were trained, such as Bengt-Herman Nilsson, Karl Erik ”KEP” Persson, and Ulf ”Mr Ski" Edborg. Many of the slopes in Riksgränsenare named after them.
The first lift was inaugurated in Riksgränsenin 1952, and in the winter season of 1968, the upper section of the lift was also inaugurated, opening up even more skiing. Since then, more lifts have been added, and there are now six lifts in total.
Over the years, Riksgränsenhas thus transformed from being a station on the border between Sweden and Norway, to being degraded to a stop and depopulated when the ore railway was electrified, to finally become the winter sports paradise it is today. On a good day, few places can beat the skiing in Riksgränsen, and it's no coincidence that Riksgränsen has repeatedly won the award for Sweden's Best Off-Piste Mountain. That Riksgränsen can also usually offer Midsummer skiing under the midnight sun is, of course, also something that must be experienced.
