Program for Ski Touring Course
Using your own ski equipment, you’ll make your way up the mountain, and then enjoy a long, untouched descent. In many areas around Riksgränsen, both on the Swedish and Norwegian sides, the ascent starts directly from the road or after a short approach. At a steady pace, the group, led by the guide, makes its way up to the summit, building anticipation for the upcoming descent. On clear days, breathtaking views are offered.
To join the tour, you should have experience with off-piste skiing and good physical fitness for uphill hiking. On a ski tour, about 75% of the time is spent climbing up the mountain.
Packing list for ski touring:
Helmet, sunglasses, ski goggles, warm clothing (down jacket, thick sweater, or similar), hat, gloves, buff/scarf, lunch and snacks, hot drink.
Day 1 | 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM
On the first day, we will go over the course structure and content, familiarize ourselves with the equipment we’ll be using during the course, and review safety gear and information. After a theoretical review, we’ll head out for a shorter ski tour where we test the equipment, take a closer look at the safety gear, and go through techniques.
Days 2 – 3 | 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM
On the second and third days of the course, we will venture farther into the mountains around Riksgränsen and Narvik. We usually start the day with a short morning meeting where the guide provides information about the expected weather and snow conditions before we take the transfer to the day’s destination. We begin the ski tour from the road and move at a pace suited to the group towards the day’s descent. During the day, we will stop for lunch, which you have either prepared yourself or pre-ordered from your guide the previous day. The area around Riksgränsen and Narvik is home to hundreds of peaks and is unique in its vast mountain and fjord views. There’s a special feeling of being more or less alone on a mountain, and we make sure to enjoy our descent back to the car before heading home to Riksgränsen to end the day.
