Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships,<\/b> or popularly known as \u201dNM\u201d (Nordic Championships) has been held annually since 1992 and is the first big mountain competition of its kind. The host for the event is our iconic ski resort Riksgr\u00e4nsen, located north of the Arctic Circle on the border between Sweden and Norway. Welcome to the 2026 edition, May 4th\u20136th.<\/p>\nWhat is SBMC?<\/b><\/h3>\n
It is the world's oldest continuously running freeride competition (started in 1992). The competition is held on the legendary Nordalsmountain<\/b>. The participants are judged by a jury based on line choice, control, flow, jumps, and technique in extremely steep and natural terrain. Therefore, it's not about skiing the fastest, but about skiing the most stylishly and impressively.<\/p>\nWhat classes are there?<\/b><\/h3>\n
The competition is open to both professionals and skilled amateurs. The classes that are usually run are:<\/p>\n
Alpine<\/b> Ladies and Gentlemen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Snowboard<\/b> Ladies and Gentlemen.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Telemark<\/b> Gentlemen and Ladies (Riksgr\u00e4nsen is one of the few places where telemark still has a strong competitive scene).<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n Nervousness and adrenaline:<\/b> Standing at the top of Nordals with an entire audience looking up from the valley below is a special feeling.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Community:<\/b> Despite it being a competition, the atmosphere is incredibly friendly. You'll be hanging out with the best riders in the Nordics.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Tough conditions<\/b> It's May in the Arctic. It can range from \u201dhero cliffs\u201d in soft slush to rock-hard ice and fog.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Inspection:<\/b> You are not allowed to test ride the competition run, only watch it from below or the side. \u201dReading\u201d the mountain is a big part of the challenge.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n The Arena in the Valley<\/b> Most people gather at the foot of Nordalsmountain. There's a DJ, speakers guiding you through the runs, and a fantastic atmosphere.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n World-class skiing:<\/b> You'll see athletes throwing themselves off cliffs and doing flips that you can hardly believe are possible in that terrain.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n Sun and snow<\/b> If the weather is good for us, it's sunglasses, sunscreen, and picnic blankets that are needed. It's one of the best \u201dhangout spots\u201d in the mountains.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n The after-party:<\/b> SBMC is known for its epic closing parties at Gr\u00f6nan. This is where the season truly wraps up.
